Northwestern University is a private research university located in Evanston, which is a suburban municipality in Cook County, situated in the US state of Illinois, north of Chicago, east of Skokie, and south of Wilmette, with a population estimated at a number of nearly 75 000 inhabitants, during the 2003 census.
NU, as Northwestern University is more commonly known, was founded in 1851, by John Evans and eight other Chicago businessmen, and since then, it managed to grow into the renowned educational institution recognized today, which consists of 12 undergraduate, graduate and professional colleges and schools, through which it offers 123 undergraduate degrees and 145 professional degrees.
NU is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, and since it was elected to the Association of American Universities, in 1917, Northwestern remains a research university with `very high` research activity. NU’s schools of engineering management and communication are among the most academically productive in the nation, dedicating nearly 840 000 square feet, on campus, to science and engineering research, most of which are in biological and medical sciences.
The athletic teams from NU are known as the Northwestern Wildcats, who compete in the Big Ten Conference, in 19 varsity sports (8 men’s and 11 women’s), their currently successful achievements being in wrestling, men’s soccer, swimming, tennis, golf, fencing, softball and lacrosse. The women’s lacrosse team has won 5 consecutive NCAA national championships between 2005 and 2009, the men’s basketball team being recognized by the Helms Athletic Foundation as the 1931 National Champion. In the 2008-2009 school year, 184 Wildcats athletes have received Academic All-Big Ten honors, of which 41 were achieved in the winter season, 75 in the fall season, and 68 in the spring season.
